BORDEN COUNTY – The Grady junior high basketball teams were in action on Monday night against Borden County.
The Lady Wildcats ran into a very good Borden County.
Borden County took a 30-2 lead at halftime and went on to win 52-7.
“Despite the score, I thought the girls did some good things,” said Grady coach Jym Dennis. “Turnovers are hurting us and giving teams easy baskets. I thought we played hard on defense and we are doing a better job on offense. We just have to continue to improve from week to week.”
Scoring for Grady were Davalynne Mendoza with three points, Raegan Dennis had two points, and Amaia Najera had two points.
Grady is now 2-3 on the season.
The Wildcats played well except for one quarter.
Grady only trailed by one point at halftime, but the Coyotes used a 19-4 run in the third quarter to secure a 43-30 victory.
“We competed and played hard for four quarters. The third quarter was a tough one for us,” said Grady coach Brett Glaze. “Cal McMorries played a complete game and great effort plays by Braxton Dillard and Knight Durham helped us defensively.”
Cal McMorries led Grady with 11 points and Kyler Cox added nine points.
Braxton Dillard and Charles Deatherage scored four points each and Knight Durham chipped in with two.
Grady’s record is now 2-3 on the season.
The Wildcats ‘B’ team also only trailed by one point at halftime, and also had a rough third quarter that allowed Borden County to pull away for a 27-14 victory.
“Our kids never showed a lack of fight,” said Glaze. “This group is fun to coach and will continue to compete and get better.”
Colton Collier had a team high four points for Grady. Adrian Mata and Logan Rodriguez finished the game with three points each and Karson Ledford and Mauricio Palma added two points apiece.
Grady’s record currently sits at 0-2.
