STANTON – The Stanton Buffaloes hosted the Pinky Jones Hooptown Classic this past weekend in Stanton.
Stanton didn’t finish with a very good record over the weekend (1-3) but the Buffs are highly competitive despite battling several injuries and having multiple players not at 100%.
Stanton opened the tournament against Ozona on Thursday. The Buffs jumped out to a 24-11 lead before dominating the second half for a 48-21 victory.
Aidan Galaviz finished with a game high 14 points and Casey Buchannan added 10 points.
Jahir Galindo tossed in eight points while Max Lopez and Eddie Wittenbarger netted five each. Hoyt Mims and Tyler Haas chipped in with three points each.
Stanton also battled Colorado City on Thursday night. The Wolves were a tough team taking an 18-11 halftime lead. C-City stayed in control throughout the second half eventually winning 35-21.
Jimmy Anderson led Stanton with 11 points. Galaviz and Hass scored three points apiece and Ryan Andler and Ethan Armendarez pitched in with two points each.
Friday’s matchup with McCamey was another hardfought game. Stanton fell behind early and tried to claw its way back in the fourth quarter, but time ran out giving the Badgers a 46-39 win.
A trio of Buffs – Armendarez, Anderson, and Lopez – led Stanton in scoring with eight points each.
Mims totaled seven points followed by Miguel Moreno with four points, Buchannan two, and Trandon Edmondson two.
The final game of the weekend was a thriller with Pecos. Stanton took an early

Pecos would outscore the Buffs by five points in the second half, mostly due to intentional free throws in the final minutes, for a 37-33 victory.
Moreno was high point for the Buffs with seven.
Lopez and Mims contributed five points each while Haas and Edmondson chipped in with four each.
Buchannan and Galindo scored three points apiece and Anderson rounded out the books with two points.
Tournament MVP went to Issac Ortiz from Dumas.
