STANTON –Stanton High School was the site of last weekend’s Annual Pinky Jones Hooptown Classic.
The Lady Buffs rattled off four wins to finish the tournament undefeated.
Stanton opened the tournament against McCamey on Thursday. The Badgers kept the game close in the first quarter, but Stanton’s defense took over in the middle quarters to take a 41-18 lead and cruise to a crushing 49-20 victory.
Madeleine Mathes finished with a game high 29 points. Sarah Denson knocked
Sarah Denson knocked down two three-pointers to contribute six points and Rylee Murry also scored six points.
Ashley Hill and Victoria Solozano tallied three points each and A Gonzales added two points.
Also on Thursday, Stanton matched up with Ozona. The Lady Buffs did not have a good start giving the Lady Lions an early 8-5 advantage. Then in the second quarter something clicked offensively and Stanton went on a 21-10 run to take a 26-18 lead.
Neither team played well in the third quarter, but Stanton again erupted in the final period for another 21 points for a 54-39 victory.
Mathes was superb with a game high 26 points and Natalie Taylor went crazy from downtown with four three-pointers for 12 points.
Solozano scored six points followed by Shelby Phillips with four and Hill with three. Murry tossed in two points and B Fisher helped out with one point.
Stanton would play Rankin on Friday. The Red Devils hit six three-pointers and added nine free throws en route to a 31-28 halftime lead.
Stanton’s offense continued to post big quarters in the second half while the long ball stopped falling for Rankin allowing the Lady Buffs to cruise to a 55-41 win.
Mathes finished with video game numbers of 32 points.
Hill ended the game with eight points followed by Phillips and Solozano with six points each and Denson added three.
Stanton would play Colorado City in the final game of the tournament.
The Lady Buffs took a slim 11-8 lead after the first quarter but trailed 21-19 at halftime.
Colorado City continued its aggressive high pressure defense in the second half and continued to give Stanton trouble. Unfortunately for the Lady Wolves, they were a little too aggressive fouling out the two best offensive players and sent Stanton to the line for 17 free throws. The Lady Buffs nailed 11 free throws which were enough for a 46-36 victory.
Mathes led all scored with 31 points and Hailea VeraCruz added five. Taylor tallied four points while Solozano and Hill had two each. Phillips and Murry rounded out the books with one point apiece.
Madeleine Mathes was named the Tournament MVP and she also set the Hooptown four game scoring record with 118 points. Natalie Taylor was selected to represent Stanton on the all-tournament team.
