STANTON – The Buffaloes ended the first round of district play with a loss to Reagan County, but started the second round with an exciting victory over Coahoma.
Reagan County played a perfect game taking a 35- 15 halftime lead and cruising to a 58-27 victory to remain unbeaten in district play.
Casey Buchannan led Stanton with six points while Miguel Moreno, Aidan Galaviz, and Trandon Edmondson added five points each.
Jahir Galindo, Ethan Armendarez, and Hoyt Mims rounded out the books with three, two, and one point respectively.
On Friday night, Stanton welcomed Coahoma to town for the start of the second round of district play.
The Bulldogs were one game up on Stanton in the standings after beating the Buffaloes earlier in January.
Determined not to lose at home, Stanton fought tooth and nail and frustrated and manhandled Coahoma to the breaking point. At times the Bulldogs were visibly flustered and highly frustrated with the officials which led to numerous turnovers and sloppy play.
Stanton’s off got off to the slowest start possible laying an egg in the first quarter. Coahoma wasn’t much better and only had a 4-0 lead.
Stanton’s Max Lopez put the Buffs right back in the mix with a three-pointer early in the second quarter and the two teams battled to a 13-10 Coahoma halftime advantage.
Third quarter action was heated, and the foul count slowly started to rise. The Buffs tossed in three free throws to tie the game at 19- 19.
In the final eight minutes, neither team could buy a bucket. Finally, Tyler Haas and Hoyt Mims managed to get open and drain a pair of three pointers giving Stanton a slim lead. Jahir Galindo would add two points and Galaviz would make three free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
Either team could have won had they just made the free throws. Stanton was 3 of 10 in the fourth quarter while Coahoma shot 4 of 11.
Ryan Andler and Galindo led the Buffs in scoring with five points each and Buchannan and Moreno added four each. Galaviz, Lopez, Haas, and Mims had three points apiece.
