LUBBOCK - Kyler Rivas, a sixth grader at Greenwood Middle School participated at the Burgess-Rushing Tennis Center Tournament and fought a tough opponent from Abilene to take the runner up spot, Saturday, August 27th in Lubbock.
Rivas, (11); participated in the 12 and under round robin division with a loss to a Friendship Junior High youngster in the first round but fought back from the loss to take second. After the deficit, Rivas regained his momentum and met tough resistance from an Abilene player and lost the first set (3-5), after finishing a (4- 4) pony set score.
Kyler took the second set convincingly (4-2), tied the contest one set apiece which ultimately triggered a tiebreaker, according to United States Tennis Association rules.
In the tiebreaker, Rivas found himself trailing 2-5 with two points from his opponent’s victory. Kyler scrapped his way and outdueled his rival to a 7-5 and tiebreaker win finishing second.
Rivas will be participating at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene, September 17, 2022. He is the son of Tommylee and Linsey Rivas of Lenorah. Also, the grandson of Savage and Sylvia Rivas, and Marcelino and Norma Chavez, all of Lenorah.
