MIDLAND – The No. 4 Garden City Bearkats had a perfect performance last week destroying the Trinity of Midland Chargers 61-0. Garden City made sure there would not be a third quarter as the Bearkats scored eight times in the first quarter.
The onslaught began just 26 seconds into the ball game with a Preston Dehlinger 22yard touchdown run. Almost two minutes later it was Dehlinger again with the touchdown run, this time he went 58-yards. The Chargers would look to attack the Bearkats through the air, but Mason Walker intercepted the pass and returned it for a touchdown giving Garden City a 24-0 lead. John Lopez scored the next touchdown with a 27yard run followed by a Logan Seidenberger touchdown pass to Mason Walker. Carson Goodwin found the endzone after running 20 yards and then Dehlinger added two points to the scoreboard by tackling the Charger’s ball carrier in the endzone for a safety putting Garden City up 46-0. Nine seconds later, Seidenberger connected with Kamdyn Roe for a 37-yard touchdown pass. The final touchdown of the game was a seven-yard run by Keith Latch mid-way through the second quarter.
“I wanted to see us come out hot. One of the problems we faced last year was we would come out flat against some teams especially in games we were the heavy favorite. So, it was good to see us stay consistent in how we have been playing,” said Garden City coach Jeff Jones.
Garden City racked up 339 yards of total offense on 20 plays and held the Chargers to -26 yards of total offense.
Seidenberger finisher 4 of 5 for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
Dehlinger led the Bearkats on the ground with 151 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
Goodwin finished with 43 yards and a touchdown while Latch added 30 yards and a touchdown.
Lopez totaled 27 yards and one touchdown and Roe chipped in with 13 yards.
Roe was the Bearkats top receiver with 37 yards and a touchdown.
Owen Seidenberger had one catch for 27 yards and Lopez hauled in one pass for 16 yards.
Walker finished with one reception for one yard and one touchdown.
Brock Braden converted five two-point conversion kicks and also tossed a onepoint conversion to Mason Walker.
Lopez led Garden City in tackles with 3.5 and Walker added three.
Walton Marshall ended the game with 2.5 tackles followed by Dehlinger and Nathan Balcazar with two each.
Braden, Seidenberger, and Goodwin tallied one tackle each.
Garden City will be on the road this week for the Game of the Week against the No. 3 May Tigers at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
“We need to keep playing sound, fundamental football,” said Jones. “We also need to be ready to accept the fact that May will get theirs and have some success, we must stay focused and win the next play.”
