STANTON – The Buffaloes junior varsity basketball team had a great start to the season winning four out of five games.
Stanton started with big 35-29 win over Ozona. The Buffaloes trailed by two points at halftime but used a monstrous fourth quarter rally to steal the victory.
Aiden Armendarez led the Buffs in scoring with 10 points. Javion Thompson, Lanc Cazares, and Mathew Marquez finished the game with six points each while Dustin Rivas had four points and Seth Stovall had two points.
Stanton would next crush Ballinger. The Buffs opened the game with a 29-11 run and cruised in the second half to a 44-25 victory.
Marquez led all scorers with 10 points and Cazares added eight points. Thompson pitched in with seven points followed by Stovall with six points, Jake Benedict five, Stovall four, Ryland Greer two, and Kanyon Pylant two.
Next up for the Buffaloes was a hard-fought match with Wall. The Hawks managed a two-point halftime lead but could not keep pace in the late minutes as Stanton rolled to a 37-29 win.
Thompson was high point with 12 while Armendarez and Cazares tossed in seven and six points respectively.
Benedict, Stovall, and Marquez scored four points each.
Stanton would finally taste the bitterness of defeat with a 52-30 loss to San Angelo Central.
Cazares had a great game with 13 points and Armendarez scored five points.
Marquez chipped in with four points while Thompson, Benedict, Stovall, and Kameron Isemann added two points apiece.
After the loss Stanton rebounded with a big win over Merkel.
It was slow going in the early minutes as the Badgers opened the game with a 7-2 run. Stanton exploded for 22 second quarter points and took a 24-11 halftime lead.
Second half action was even play earning the Buffs a 41-28 victory.
Armendarez was electric with 14 points and Cazares had another good game scoring 12 points.
Benedict finished in double digits with 10 points while Thomspson helped out with three points and Stovall added two.
Stanton will be back in action on Jan. 3 with a home game against Alpine at 5 p.m. Then on Jan. 6, the Buffaloes will travel to Presidio for a 5 p.m. game.
