GRADY – Grady’s varsity and junior varsity girls started off 2020 with two big wins against Westbrook.

Grady lost to Westbrook in the very first game of the season, but after huge improvements by the varsity and junior varsity Wildcats, Grady beat Westbrook with big wins at home on last Tuesday night.

Grady’s junior varsity won 30-21.

Delaney Saunders finished with a game high 16 points and Kenley Ivy added 10.

Ashlynn Peugh and Breanna Garza closed out the scoring with two points each.

“The girls played really good defense and did a good job handling the press,” said Grady coach Jacinda Langen.

The varsity Wildcats finished the game with a flurry of points to beat Westbrook 42-38.

Grady trailed late in the fourth quarter but a couple big stops defensively and some timely free throws game Grady a one-point lead. With just seconds remaining, Grady’s Jessi Everett was at the free throw line for two shots.

She hit the front end of the pair to give Grady a two-point advantage. But after missing the second free throw, Everett outraced every Westbrook player to the loose ball, secured the rebound, and tossed in an easy lay-up securing Grady’s victory.

Everett led Grady with 13 points and Hadyn Burge and Maddy Garza added eight and seven points respectively.

Sydney Gonzales finished the game with five points followed by Mercedes Jimenez three points and Ashley Hill two.

“This was a hard fought win and a huge team effort,” stated Langen. “We were missing Raina Short due to an injury but the team stepped up and really came together to pull out an exciting win.”

The victory ended the regular season leaving the varsity with an 18-3 record.
