STANTON – In the world of sports, sometimes a team wins and other times they lose. That’s how the past few weeks have been for Stanton’s junior varsity basketball teams.

The games started on Jan. 7 against Clyde in Stanton.

Stanton’s girls dominated Clyde from start to finish. The Lady Buffs jumped out to a 13-2 lead at halftime and cruised to a 37-26 victory.

Chaselyn Fisher and Vivian Soloranzo led Stanton with eight points each and Madyson Gallegos added seven.

Also scoring for Stanton were Rylee Murry with six points, Macy Nix had five points and Villa three points.

The junior varsity boys game was much closer with Stanton needing overtime to win.

Clyde took the early 13-5 lead but Stanton came roaring back in the third quarter to trail 20-18. By the end of regulation, the two teams were knotted at 34-34.

Over the final four minutes Stanton netted one more point for the 42-41 overtime victory.

Thaddeus Zarate finished with a game high 17 points, including all eight of Stanton’s points in overtime.

Arturo Salinas tallied 12 points for the Buffs followed by James Villa with eight and Max Lopez with five.

Next on the schedule was a road trip to Coahoma.

The Lady Buffs again dominated their opponent with a 29-15 performance.

Murry scored a team high eight points and Soloranzo and Villa added six points apiece.

Reyes, Nix, Asher, and Gallegos had two points each for Stanton.

The junior varsity boys lost to Coahoma in the final minutes.

Stanton took what seemed to be a commanding 8-0 lead after the first quarter. But the next two periods would belong to Coahoma allowing the Bulldogs to tie the score at 15-15.

With one quarter remaining, Coahoma made three buckets and Stanton only made two giving Coahoma the 21-20 comefrom-behind win.

Salinas finished with a game high 14 points and four three-pointers. Nickoli Aguirre totaled five points and Eddie Wittenburger chipped in with one point.

Next up for Stanton was a pair of tough Jim Ned teams.

The junior varsity girls couldn’t keep pace and lost 27-18.

Murry, Soloranzo, and Villa scored four points each while Gallegos and Fisher added three points each.

The junior varsity boys played hard but fell short 45-17.

Salinas led Stanton with eight points while Jeremiah Utvick added three and Villa scored two.

Wittenburger tossed in two points followed by Casey Buchanan with one point and Jimmy Anderson with one point.

Stanton will travel to Colorado City on Jan. 24 and will then host Merkel on Jan.

28. The girls are set to play at 4 pm and the boys will take the floor at 5 pm.
