Lady Buffs start strong, finish week with pair of losses

STANTON – The Lady Buffs looked spectacular against Odessa but struggled in their next two contests against Sonora and Crane.

Odessa Compass had little chance at victory as Stanton’s defense was at the top of its game. The Buffs scored 44 straight points and went on to win 48-4.

Zoey Ruiz had a game high 12 points and Gaby Rodriguez and Rylee Murry added nine and eight points respectively.

Sarah Denson played a superb game scoring seven points while Kayleigh Villa had four and Analiese Gonzales, Natalie Taylor, Sydney Harris, and Hailea Verzcruz had two points each.

On Jan. 19, Stanton looked to move up the district standings with a win over Sonora but the Broncos managed a 35-25 victory to secure third place.

Rodriguez had a team high 10 points followed by Harris with seven, Ruiz four, Taylor two, and Villa two.

The Lady Buffs game last Friday against Crane was less than stellar. Crane managed a 12-1 run to open the game and close out the first half up 29-8.

Despite their best efforts, the Buffs fell to Crane 48-23.

Ruiz led Stanton with nine points and Rodriguez added five.

Murry tossed in three points while Harris, Denson, and Veracruz added two points each.

Next up for Stanton is a road game in Coahoma against the Bulldogettes at 6 p.m.
