Traffic stop leads to 10 illegals being discovered

STANTON - The southern border of Texas is under siege and the over flow is traveling right through Martin County on Interstate 20.

Monday afternoon, a Martin County Deputy observed a traffic violation at the 161 mile marker east of Stanton.

When the deputy made contact with the driver, he four nine other individuals in the vehicle.

All ten persons were undocumented immigrants from Honduras. Last week, officers in Pecos County detained eight undocumented immigrants on Interstate 20 until Immigration Officers took custody.

The deputy contacted Customs and Border Protection and once on the scene, federal officers took the immigrants into custody and went off into the sunset, never divulging where they were taking the immigrants or what would be done with them.

“The caravans have arrived and many are making it through the lines of defense,” stated Martin County Chief Deputy Ernie Wakefield. “Farmers, ranchers, and people living or working in rural county areas need to be extra vigilant.”

Wakefield explained while not all immigrants crossing the boarder are hardened criminals, he did assure that these caravans do include murders, drug runners, and gang members.

“If you do spot a group of people trespassing on your property, to not engage them,” said Wakefield. “They could have some bad intentions or even kill you.”

Anyone with concerns is urged to call law enforcement. If it’s an emergency then dial 911, but if its just a concern then call the sheriff’s office at 432-756- 3336.
