GARDEN CITY Basketball season if off to a great start in Garden City with all four of the girls’ programs undefeated heading into Thanksgiving Break.
The Garden City varsity Lady Kats have sprinted out to a 4-0 record with blowout wins against Iraan, McCamey, Odessa Compass, and Grape Creek.
Barbara Wittrein has been the leading scorer in 3 of 4 games, dropping a season high 24 in the 60-14 win over Iraan. Cousins Emy and Amber Schwartz scored 15 and 14 in the 64-19 win over Compass.
The Lady Kats outscored McCamey 52-15 and Grape Creek 37-24 Wittrein is leading the team in scoring averaging 13.5 per game. She is followed by Kelsey Gully with 9.5, and Emy Schwartz, Amber Schwartz, and Karly Baker each with 7 ppg.
Wittrein's 8.8 rebounds per game leads the team, followed by Baker with 7 rpg, Shelby Braden with 6 rpg, and Emy and Amber Schwartz with 5 per game.
Kelsey Gully has dished 3.3 assists per game to lead the team while Emy Schwartz and Karly Baker average 2.5 and Ella Braden averages 1.5.
The Lady Kats have been stingy on defense giving up an average of 17.5 points per game. Emy Schwartz has been active defensively, leading the team with 5.5 deflections a game and being near the top with 4 steals per game.
Kelsey Gully leads the team with 4.3 steals per game, while averaging 3.3 deflections. Shelby Braden has averaged 3.7 spg and 3.3 dpg.
Barbara Wittrein and Ella Braden have averaged 3.5 and 3.0 steals per game, while Aurora Alvarado has averaged 3.5 deflections per game.
The Lady Kats return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Forsan. They then spend the weekend of December 1-3 playing in the Lamesa Tournament.
The Garden City junior varsity Lady Kats have rushed out to a 4-0 record to start the season.
Kaylee Garcia has led the Lady Kats, averaging 17.5 points per game. Smooth Shooting Keegan Batla has averaged 10.5 while Point Guard Lacy Seidenbergerr has averaged 6.5.
The Lady Kats started the season with a 35-16 win over Ozona and then beat the Stanton Freshmen 48-13. GC beat Odessa Compass Academy 60-1 and Grape Creek 61-6.
Lynette Wittrein has averaged 4 points per game, while Kyler Dieringer has averaged 7.25, Sadie Fuchs has averaged 7, and Jasmine Nunez has averaged 1.5.
The Lady Kats will travel to Forsan to play the Lady Buffs at 4:00 pm on Tuesday.
The Garden City Junior High Girls’ Basketball teams both went into the Thanksgiving break with a 2-0 record.
The 7th grade team opened the season with a 52-6 win over Robert Lee. Landry Baker led the team in scoring with 19 points. Addison Goodwin put in 12, while Natalie Crownover finished with 7. Other scorers were Joslyn Ha lfmann with 6, Landry Dieringer with 4, and Sara Garvin and Brenly Schwartz had 2.
Baker was one of three players in double figures in a 45-6 win over Miles. Baker’s 17 was followed by Crownover and Goodwin each with 10. Schwartz finished with 4 points while Dieringer and Halfmann had 2 each.
The 8th grade girls slipped by Robert Lee 21-19 and then beat Veribest Ella Brinkley led the scoring against Robert Lee with 7. Ivy Braden finished with 5, Emily Eggemeyer had 3, and Kyleigh Roe, Sydnee Gully, and Katie Braden had 2 each.
The Lady Kats balanced scoring continued against Veribest, as Kyleigh Roe, Katie Braden, and Sophia Sullivan each had 6. Helen Marshall had 5, Brinkley had 4, and Eggemeyer and Ivy Braden each had 2 in the 31-4 win.
Both teams resume action Monday at home against Irion County.
