Stanton opens roundball season with two losses

Like many teams across the state, the Stanton Buffaloes are adjusting to life off the grid iron and on the hardwood with the start of basketball season.

The Buffaloes were in Denver City just before the Thanksgiving Break.

The Mustangs took an early lead and the Buffaloes and opened a 26-16 halftime lead.

Denver City exploded in the third quarter for 19 points and went on to win 56-32.

Bret Davis led Stanton with 11 points followed by Nic Haas with nine points, Aidan Armendarez seven, Jake Benedict four, and Lanc Cazares one.

Leading the Buffaloes in rebounds were Davis and Javion Thompson with six each, Benedict recorded five, Cazares, Armendarez, and Haas grabbed three rebounds each.

Dustin Rivas and Matthew Marquez added one rebound each.

Marquez and Davis dished out two assists each while Armendarez and Thompson had one apiece.

Davis and Armendarez led Stanton with four steals each while Thompson had three, Benedict two, Ryland Greer one, and Haas one.

Stanton’s first game following the break was a home contest against Garden City.

A slow start doomed Stanton as Garden City was up 18-9 at halftime. The Bearkats added another 16 points in the second half to beat Stanton 34-22.

Davis was high point for the Buffs with seven and Marquez added six. Haas tallied five points while Armendarez and Cazares tossed in two points each.
