GARDEN CITY – The junior high Bearkats dusted Marfa 20-0 for a homecoming victory last week.
Miles Halfmann got Garden City off to a strong start with an interception on first series of game. He would eventually score the first touchdown with a 12 yard run.
Later in the game, Marfa was looking to tie the score, but the Bearkat trio of Rylan Jones, Roberto Almazan, and Uziel Lopez stopped the Shorthorns on 4th down in the red zone. Garden City scored two more times on touchdown runs by Brody Walts. The first was a four-yard carry and the second a one-yard run that was set up by a 38-yard Walts run. Jones and Tofer Baker each converted the point after making the score 20-0.
Marfa was hoping to get at least on touchdown but the Garden City defense held the Shorthorns at the goal line as time expired.
Keegan Landers and Lopez each had a fumble recovery for the Bearkats.
Also playing well on defense were Almazan, Lopez, Presley Jost and Halfmann.
Offensive linemen with a strong game blocking were center Almazan, guard Jones, and tight end Lopez.
The junior high Kats are now 5-1 on the season.
