Mathes named Report-Telegram All-Area Team MVP

WEST TEXAS - Three girls basketball players from Stanton and Grady were chosen for the 2021-22 MRT Postseason High School Girls Basketball Team.

This is the ReporterTelegram’s fifth edition of its all-area high school girls basketball team. Honorees include all classifications and were voted on by Oscar LeRoy and Christopher Hadorn.

Stanton’s Madeleine Mathes received the highest accolades as she was chosen the Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player.

Mathes averaged 24.5 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.3 steals for the Lady Buffaloes, who won their first district title in 12 years.

Grady’s Sydney Gonzales was named to the MRT Second Team.

Gonzales was one of the reasons why the Lady Wildcats were able to make the playoffs in a tough District 8-1A.

She averaged 11.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals to lead Grady to a 20-13 overall record. Gonzales was named Garden City Tournament MVP.

Also from Grady and chosen Honorable Mention was Jessi Everett.

She averaged 10 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 4.3 steals, was All-District 8-lA first team, and named Garden City all-tournament team.
