HOUSTON - Lou Vena Tunnell was born on Sept. 5, 1935 to Vera and Jim McCoy in Knox. She died on Aug. 8, 2022, while vacationing in Seaside Beach, Florida.
She grew up in the small West Texas town of Stanton, where her grandfather owned the hardware store and her father was the Justice of the Peace. She played on her school basketball team and was a Drum Majorette for the Stanton High School marching band. She married her high school sweetheart, Jim Tunnell. They later moved to Houston, for the construction business where they raised their three children.
She was a woman of faith and began each day reading the Bible and praying for her loved ones. She was a longtime member of Houston’s First Baptist Church which she considered her extended family. She enjoyed serving her community alongside her sweet friends in the Day Spring class. Bowling was the highlight of her week and she loved her bowling buddies at First Baptist, many of which she has been bowling with for several decades.
Most of all, She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; playing games and working puzzles with them. She taught us all examples of grace and faith, courage and strength, kindness, humor and unconditional love.
She was preceded to heaven by her beloved husband, James Douglas Tunnell; her brother, James Clayton McCoy; her mother, Vera Burnam McCoy; and her father, James Irwin McCoy.
She is survived by her daughter Deonna Flores, sonin- law Robert Flores, and their daughters Kelly Flores and Carrie Perez; and by her daughter Terri T. Breaux, son-inlaw Maurice Breaux, and their children Andre’ Breaux and Brandi Segura; and by her son Greg Tunnell, daughter-inlaw Terri Ward Tunnell, and their children Aaron Tunnell and Amanda Nespral; along with her precious great grandchildren Aiden Flores; Avery, Preslie and Millie Perez; Kayla and Allie Breaux; Remy, Brock and Ava Segura. She is also survived by her two sisters-in-law, Nann Welch McCoy and Glynda Welch Tunnell; and many loving nieces and nephews.
