MONAHANS - Delbert Ray Thompson died Jan. 7, 2023 in Monahans. He was born on Feb. 21, 1958 in Kermit, to Sammy Lee Thompson and Jimmie Francis Washington Lane. He lived his early years in Kermit until moving to Hamlin, where was a standout athlete. He graduated from Hamlin High School in 1977. He attended UT-Austin and UT-El Paso where he was drafted by the NFL in the 5th round by the Kansas City Chiefs '82- '84, then the New York Jets during pre-season. When his career was done he settled in Big Spring with his high school sweetheart, Katherine McGee, where they had many years. He worked for a home fabrication company while living there.
He loved his family and friends and enjoyed life until the end.
He leaves to cherish his memory Shenikqua Stewart of Abilene, Falisa Jett(Chris) of Stanton, Sharea of Mobile, Al and Katheron McGee of Hamlin; sisters VJ and Ida of Monahans; brothers Donnell Lane of Killen and Alfred McAffee of Monahans; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial was Jan. 17, at Harkey Funeral Home in Monahans.
