MARTIN COUNTY – Cross country season is just around the corner with interschool competitions allowed to start on Aug. 17. But this season will have several new restrictions that can make it difficult for coaches to find enough meets for all their teams to compete each week.

MARTIN COUNTY – After month and months of speculation, football is back at Stanton and Grady high schools. The first week of practices are an acclimatization period where players can only wear helmets. The second week of practices players can dawn pads for the first week of full contact activity.

Fishing Report

Alan Henry GOOD. Water clear 84 degrees; 0.54’ low. Black bass remain good and best at daybreak with topwater, worms, and jigs. Till sundown fish brush, and points suspending between 10-16 feet. Crappie are good on jigs in deeper shady spots. Catfish are fair on live bait, cut bait, and stinkbait.

Wildcats are expected to compete, but not picked for playoffs

STANTON - Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine has been the talk around the water cooler for a couple weeks as football season draws closer. After the UIL realignment, the Grady Wildcats will now compete in District 6-A Division I for the 2020-2021 season.

Local softball team finishes third in Midland tournament

MIDLAND - The Lone Star softball team competed in the Midland 8 Game Tournament over the weekend and finished third in the 18 and under silver bracket. The team started with pool play and finished with one win, four losses and one tie to move into the silver bracket.

Dave Campbells offers first look at new football season

MARTIN COUNTY - Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine hit the store shelves recently and gave some insight into the upcoming 2020 high school football season. The Stanton Buffaloes have been on a slump over the past few years and according to Campbell, 2020 will be more of the same.

STANTON - One of Stanton’s most talented athletes has signed to play college football and run college track. Devan Simpson, a major contributor on the football field and standout track hurdler, has signed with Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.
