LEE’S SUMMIT, MO - Clarence Wayne Church, 89 of Lee’s Summit, MO, was born, Mar. 29, 1932, in Martin County, near Stanton, the son of Steve B. and Lois (Standefer) Church. He died Aug. 3, 2021, at his home surrounded with love and family.
He was a 1949 Stanton High School graduate. He furthered his education at Graceland College, Central Missouri State University, and Western New Mexico University earning his master’s degree.
He was a United States Army Korean War Veteran and was stationed at the Pentagon in the Staff Communications Office. He received the highest security clearance and was put in charge of Presidential documents. After discovering he was also adept at construction, he was temporarily put in charge of crews building the classrooms at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
In April 1959, he was united in marriage to Olive D. Vincent in Stanton; they later divorced. On Oct. 24, 1987, he was united in marriage to Donna C. Mann in Belton, MO.
He was first employed as a health & P.E. Teacher in Raytown, MO. Later he became a junior high guidance counselor for the Hobbs, NM school district. After retiring from public education, he returned to his roots as a farmer and rancher. He was an Elder in the Community of Christ, serving as pastor for the churches in Hobbs and Stanton. He helped build the Community of Christ Church in Stanton. He also helped build and was actively involved in the Sacramento Mountain Retreat campground for over forty years. He was an active member of the Community of Christ in Pleasant Hill, MO. He was also a member of the Pleasant Hill Seniors Group. Growing up on a farm, he enjoyed barrel racing and roping with his horse, Sunny. Besides his full-time job, he also enjoyed bee keeping and fast pitch softball. Wayne was an outstanding pitcher, having received many awards including league MVP five years in a row. His secret knuckleball was an absolute "out" for his opponents. Some of his hobbies were golfing, fishing, camping, and gardening which he shared with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Douglas Church; sister Ouida Hursh; granddaughter Monica Ramirez; and two sons-in-law Larry Jordan and Kevin Anderson.
He is survived by his wife Donna; five children Sherri (and David) Macomber of Independence, MO, Kimberly Church of Independence, MO, Lori (and Stan) Perry-Durham of Lee's Summit, MO, Russell Church of Katy, Julia Anderson of Independence, MO; stepchildren Suzanne (and Kenneth) Schirlls of Pleasant Hill, MO, and Brian Perry of Belton, MO; 24 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; seven great great grandchildren; sister Colleen Leonard of Midland; and brothers Fred Church of Canyon, and Steve Church of Mesa, AZ; plus many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Aug. 11, at the Stanley-Dickey funeral home. Graveside Military Services and interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with full military honors by the United States Army and the V.F.W. Post #3118 Honor guard.
