Jerry Cannon

RULE - Jerry Cannon, 76, a longtime resident of Rule, died Mar. 15, 2023. A funeral service was Mar. 18 at the Church of Christ in Haskell, with Paul Leonard officiating. Burial followed at the Rule Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 31, 1947, in Haskell, to Jessie (Sturdivant) and John Cannon. He married the love of his life Molly Wilcox in Haskell, on Sept. 22, 1978. He was a devoted member of the Rule Church of Christ, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved spending time with his family.

Mr. Cannon, an avid Dr. Pepper drinker, was a math teacher to thousands and a friend to everyone he met. He was a kind and thoughtful man and his legacy will live on in the many lives he touched. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Abilene Christian University and spent many years teaching at Rule, Garden City, and currently at Haskell High School. He loved his students and fellow teachers and taught them all that “Math is Fun” and donuts and Dr. Pepper are brain food. He was passionate about UIL Math and he enjoyed playing golf.

A silent servant, he never met a person in need whom he did not try to help. Whether it be a student struggling to learn or a neighbor needing their yard mowed or computer fixed, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He didn’t look for recognition in the kind things he did for others because he found great joy in just being a servant to those around him.

He was awarded Rule Man of the Year, was Mayor of Rule for a number of years and he served on the Haskell Memorial Hospital Board.

He is survived by his wife,Molly Cannon of Rule; daughter Tiffany Glenn and husband Tim of Pinehurst; son Wade Welborn and wife Stacy of Tulsa, OK; daughter Stephanie Mitchum and husband Bryant of Jefferson, GA; son John Cannon and wife Denise of North Port, FL.; grandchildren Sara Haynes, Aaron Haynes, Taylor Glenn, Tarryn Glenn, Tristyn Glenn, Nicole Welborn, Melanie Welborn, Bella Welborn, Mimi Welborn, Tommy Cannon; great grandchildren Everrett Cannon; and numerous nieces and nephews that greatly adored him.
