John Day Zugg III

John Day Zugg III, 58, of Montgomery, Alabama, formerly of Stanton, TX, passed away Sunday, August 3rd, 2025. He is survived by his daughters Aubrea Zugg Marquez and her husband Joseph Marquez, and Ashlea Zugg Valdez and her husband Jorge Valdez of Odessa, Texas; his mother Carolyn Gilmore and step-father Terry Gilmore of Stanton, Texas; brother Labin Gilmore of Stanton, Texas; and many wonderful grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by all of his grandparents, his father John Day Zugg Jr. (“Big John”) and sister Carolyn Yates.

John was born July 3rd, 1967 in Odessa, Texas. He grew up in Stanton, Texas and made many life-long friendships and relationships there. John graduated from Stanton High School. He was also baptized in Stanton. John joined the Navy and later returned to start his family. John wasn’t one to fit into a box and he lived his life by his own rules. John was something of a rolling stone. He wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. He learned the insulation trade from his dad, uncle and cousins. He worked in the oilfields of West Texas. He traveled and worked all over Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and parts of Alabama. John was a talker, he was a roamer, he never met a stranger. He loved to share his theories on life and his inventions. He was known for his vivid storytelling and his jokester personality. John will be greatly missed by his family, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of friends he made along the way.
