MIDLAND - Velma Dean (Odom) McMillan, 91 of Midland, passed away May 21, 2026, at Midland Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., May 31, at the Downtown Church of Christ in Stanton.
Velma was born Mar. 19, 1935, in Baird, to Loyd Arnold and Mary Gladys (Minton) Odom.
She was raised in and attended school in Stanton. She was a member of the Downtown Church of Christ in Stanton. She married B.G. (Bob) McMillan on January 30, 1958, in Lovington, New Mexico. Velma loved her family and friends and spending time with them.
Due to surgical complications at age 25, she lost her eyesight. She attended training for the blind in Arkansas and was able to care for her family and home because of what she learned there.
She loved meeting people and learning about their lives and was always willing to help and be a friend. She and Bob lived in Stanton, Midland, El Paso, Chaparral and Ruidoso, New Mexico and then back to Stanton. She lived the last 10 years at Polo Park retirement center in Midland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brother R.P. Odom, sister Wanda Allene Odom, nephew Bobby Odom and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is survived by her daughters, Allene Mashburn and husband James of Midland, Dolores LeGros and husband Tim of DeRidder, Louisiana and Debra Hartsfield and husband Kevin also of DeRidder; four grandchildren, Loyd Mashburn and wife Marie, Lyle Mashburn, Sarah Mizell and husband Page and Erin Fink; three great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; one great-great-granddaughter; one niece, one nephew and several cousins.
We want to thank the staff of Home Care Plus for the wonderful care that she received the past few years, especially her partner in crime Orya and her nurse Nicole.
