WEST TEXAS — Despite a drop in the number of traffic crashes throughout the year, 2020 saw a spike in the number of fatalities overall and deaths of people in Texas from not wearing a seat belt. That’s why TxDOT is reminding everyone that buckling up is the best defense in a crash.

Riley Mathis runs to second base during Martin County Babe Ruth Leagee TeeBall action earlier this year. Hundreds of Martin County youth have enjoyed playing baseball the past couple months. Closing ceremonies are set for May 25.

Wildcat’s track season come to a close

LEVELLAND – The Grady Wildcats were in Levelland on Apr. 23 and 24 for the Region I Class A Track and Field Meet at South Plains College in Levelland. Boys Division Individual Results 100 Meter Isaiah Ontiveros, 11.73 400 Meters 5. Frankie Jimenez, 54.05 800 Meter Nick Hamm, 2:23.

Benedict honored with all-area selection

MIDLAND - The Reporter-Telegram released the fourth edition of its all-area high school boys basketball team. Honorees were voted on by Oscar LeRoy and Christopher Hadorn. Superlative and District 5-3A selections were: MVP – Joseph Venzant, Midland Christian, Sr.

Smith, Lopez represent Stanton at regional track meet

ABILENE – Stanton’s regional qualifiers, Ashton Smith and Max Lopez, competed at the Region I Class AAA Track and Field Meet at Abilene Christian University on April 23. Lopez ran the 400 Meter and finished with a 53.05. Smith placed fifth in the shot put with a personal best heave of 48-02.50.

Stanton’s Lady Buffaloes

Stanton’s Lady Buffaloes are co-district runners up and earned a spot in the state playoffs. Stanton lost the seeding game 8 to 1 against Reagan County Monday night, putting the team as the three seed coming out of district. The Lady Buffs will be play Ballinger at 6 p.m. Apr. 29 in Sweetwater. 

Grady junior high wraps up track season

ACKERLY – Grady’s junior high track teams competed in the District 8A Track and Field Championships on Apr. 8 at Sands High School. Grady had a good day bringing home nine gold medals: Gunner Cherry – 2 Aaron Cates – 2 Alyssa Olviedo – 2 Emma Parker – 3 Boys Team Rankings 1.

Short, Griffin claim Region I tennis crown

LEVELLAND – Grady’s girls and boys doubles teams competed at the Region I Class A Tennis Meet at South Plains College in Levelland on Apr. 26 and 27.
