Garden City Bearkats sit second after first round of District 11 play

GARDEN CITY - The No. 8 ranked (TABC) Garden City Bearkats took care of business last week crushing Veribest 67-23 to stay alone in second place of the District 11 standings after the first round of play. No. 4 Irion County lead the district.

GRADY – Grady’s varsity girls’ basketball team is still in the playoff hunt after splitting their district games with Sands and Wellman-Union. Against Sands, Grady started well only trailing 10-7 after the first quarter.

– After losing its district opener, No. 9 Garden City has won three straight district games including its two most recent wins over Bronte and Robert Lee. Bronte put up a decent fight but still lost by double digits. Garden City had a 16-7 lead after the first quarter and was up 28-18 at the half.

– The Garden City Lady Bearkats are sitting fourth in District 11 after splitting their two most recent games with Bronte and Robert Lee. Against Bronte, Garden City opened with a 9-4 run to take the early lead but Bronte responded in the second quarter to tie the game at 1414 at halftime.

– Stanton powerlifting teams ran into some strong competition at the Coahoma Invitational. The girls placed seventh and the boys were third. The Lady Buffs were led by Paisley Carby and Brittyn Carson.

– The Grady Wildcats remained perfect in district plays after picking up wins over Wellman-Union and Dawson County. Against Wellman the victory appeared evident after the first minute of play. After the first full quarter Grady was up 25-6 and by halftime the lead had ballooned to 5112.

– Stanton’s junior high basketball teams were in action against Crane and Odessa Compass Academy. The seventh grade girls A team destroyed Crane 52-19. Lauren Alvizo had a game high 21 points and Cote McCown added 12 points.

– Grady’s junior varsity girls’ basketball team went 2-1 at the Rankin Tournament to finish second. Grady opened the tournament with a 23-19 victory over Paint Rock. Miah Muniz was high point with 11 and Aislynne Mendoza added four points.

– Grady’s junior varsity Wildcats took on Sands last week in district competition. The Wildcats used a big first half to propel them to victory. Grady took an early 17-11 lead and increased their advantage to 26-13 by halftime.
